Hydroseeding and hydromulching continue to gain popularity in Pittsburgh and across the United States. They are attractive alternatives to traditional planting processes and an effective method that helps residential and commercial landscapes get the results they deserve.
Pittsburgh hydroseeding companies have different techniques and services that help their clients achieve their lawn care goals.
Hydroseeding is a planting technique that uses a unique mixture of seed, wood fiber, fertilizer, and stabilizing emulsion with hydroseeding equipment. Hydromulching is a mulching technique that involves the application of a slurry of water, wood fiber mulch, and often a tackifier.
Hydroseeding is an alternative method to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seeds that is not only more convenient but also provides an environment conducive to plant growth. The hydroseed mix can be sprayed using hoses, which makes it an effective way of distributing seed and fertilizer in a short time frame. Hydroseeding and hydromulching techniques are commonly used for erosion control as it protects exposed soils from erosion by water and wind.
Hydroseeding is useful for both residential and commercial applications to aid:
● Habitat restoration
● Erosion control
● Lawn care
● Pastureland reclamation
● Large scale construction sites
● Sports fields and recreational sites
Looking to transform your existing lawn? Hydroseeding is not typically done over an existing lawn. However, that does not mean you can’t take advantage of hydroseeding. It is better to start from scratch by completely redoing your existing lawn or undertaking overseeding. Overseeding is done with a power rake and broadcasting seed.
Benefits of Hydroseeding
● Requires less water than sod
● Works better on slopes than grass seed
● Promotes the growth of a stronger root system
● More durable than traditional seeding methods
● Minimal labor required
● Holds moisture, which allows for seeds to germinate faster
Benefits of Hydromulching
● Mulch acts as a hydraulic growth medium providing a protective cover and moisture reservoir for the seeds that minimizes moisture evaporation
● The thickness of the mulch acts as a protective layer that helps prevent crop damage by birds and other species
● Protects seeds from wind erosion and water runoff
● Covers large areas of land quickly and easily
● Promotes quicker growth
● Erosion control
Not only do these techniques have a high success rate and support the growth of a beautiful lawn but they also have environmental benefits. Hydroseeding and hydromulching support a harmonious ecosystem with countless environmental benefits.
At Pitts Hydroseeding, we have our own custom blend of premium seeds, mulch, fertilizers and tackifiers that are evenly distributed in a sprayed material that will promote rapid germination and encourage deep roots. Our seeds are more resistant to external problems because they grow directly from your soil and not from a sod farm.
Our team of professionals uses the following process to transform your landscape:
● Seed selection: we have our own custom blend of premium seeds that we tailor to each of our clients' needs
● Soil test: we want to make sure the pH of your soil is between 6.5 and 7 before we start hydroseeding or hydromulching
● Clear the ground: we will remove any weeds or debris so that we are starting with a clean slate (e.g., bare soil)
● Grade, apply topsoil and re-grade the soil: we will prepare the soil for hydroseeding
● Spray: we will spray the hydroseed or hydromulch across the soil with our state-of-the-art hydroseeder machine
Hydroseeding and hydromulching generate results quickly, as you can usually see grass sprouting within seven to 10 days. While there are many benefits to hydroseeding and hydromulching, it is important to know that you cannot walk on the lawn for about 5-6 weeks. It is important to keep your lawn moist for the first two months after hydroseeding or hydromulching. You will want to water your lawn at least three times a day for the first few weeks with a gradual reduction over time. It does require some patience, but we can assure you that it is worth the wait.
Why choose hydroseeding over sod?
Sodding requires transplanting a bed of already-grown grass onto your lawn. The transplanted bed of grass includes a thin layer of soil and roots. The hope is that once it is transplanted the roots will take hold on your lawn and the grass with thrive. While sodding gives you immediate gratification, it requires a significant amount of water and may not be successful for several different factors (e.g., soil type, climate, water). With hydroseeding, there is less risk as you are growing your grass instead of trying to keep it alive. Hydroseeding is also more cost-effective and has a higher success rate than sod.
